Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the answers to the things we get asked the most. Please do get in touch if you have any other questions. We're always happy to help.

Do I have to audition to become a member?

No, it's not necessary to audition to become a member. The only time we hold auditions is for specific roles and parts our shows.

What experience do I need to have had?

None! The only requirements we have is you are willing to commit to rehearsals, learning lines/songs and have fun!

When do we need to pay term fees?

Term fees should be paid by the first day of each term. Invoices are usually sent out in the holidays.

Do we have to pay for the full term at my first session?

No, we understand that everyone is different and Basingstoke Stage School might not be for everybody, so for your first session you pay for that session only. If you decide to join us, then you pay for the remainder of the term the following week.

How do I get included in your shows?

Every member is included in every show. If you don’t feel ready to audition for roles, you are automatically included in the ensemble. With Revues, we have show numbers that every member is included in.

Do you just do rehearsals for shows in your sessions?

No, we also hold workshops to help you build your skills. If we have rehearsals, we still have objectives to help you build on your skills and theatre knowledge built into those rehearsals.

Do you cater for additional needs?

Yes! Whilst we can’t offer one to one support for members during sessions, we believe theatre should be for everybody and work with members and their parents to try and make our sessions as accessible as possible for as many people as possible. We have members with a variety of levels of additional needs who have shone in ways they didn’t realise they could, since being a part of Basingstoke Stage School.

What is a session like?

Sessions can vary depending on what we are doing. Sometimes we will have workshops to help build on your skills, sometimes we will rehearse scenes or songs in our upcoming shows, sometimes it’s a bit of both. We will try and include games in some sessions. We always have a meeting and talk at the end of each session to talk about what we have done that day and tell you about future plans, where you can also ask any questions.

What do I need to bring to each session?

Water, jazz shoes if you have them and any scripts or lyrics you’ve been given.

Do members wear a uniform?

No, members do not need to buy or wear a uniform.

What should I wear?

Comfortable light clothing that you can move in. Ideally jazz shoes if you have them. No crocs or flip flops as these are not good for dancing and you are more likely to trip in them.

Is there an extra cost for shows?

There are no additional fees to take part in our shows; the only extra costs are for your own costume and for tickets for family and friends would like to come and watch. We often ask members to provide their own costumes to keep our term costs low, however we attempt to keep them simple to try and ensure they are not too expensive or difficult for parents to provide. We also ask that all members wear plain black shoes for shows, preferably jazz shoes or plimsolls.
